This week, ESET researchers published their findings about a piece of malware that targets Mac users. Called CloudMensis, this previously unknown backdoor spies on users of the compromised Mac devices and collects information from them by exfiltrating documents, keystrokes, and screen captures.
Among other things, the discovery shows that macOS is not immune to malware as such and that Mac users should also use security software. In fact, CloudMensis shows why some users might even want to enable additional defenses, such as Apple’s new Lockdown Mode. This new setting is available on macOS, iOS and iPadOS, and aims to protect high-risk users from targeted attacks by switching off certain features on their devices and so reducing their attack surface.
